We’re the Merrill Family. We like coffee, adventure, and treasure hunting. We list our finds at Merrill’s Vintage Market and Gallery eBay and Etsy shops.  We’d love to share a little about what we do and why we do it!

How did it all start?

A few years ago I went to an auction. At that auction I bought a box for $1. I bid on it because it contained (under the old tablecloths) a  Jake and the Never Land Pirates ship. (The pirate ship was on Amazon at the time for close to a $100.00 now it’s close to $200). The pirate ship was for our kids but, at the bottom of the box, I found some old military items and a G.I. Joe that was unopened. I put the items (minus the pirate ship for the kids) on eBay and they promptly sold.

Since then we’ve frequented auctions, estate sales, and storage auctions looking for items that are interesting, historic, and artistic. Some of the items we keep, some we gift, and some end up in Merrill’s Vintage Market and Gallery!

Why do we do this?

Apart from paying off our student loans a bit earlier? We do it because it’s always a treasure hunt. Everyone loves a good treasure hunt. Opening a box that appears to be junk and finding something unexpected is a fun feeling. It also involves a bit of detective work to identify items and signatures. (Note: by law artists should be required to print their name under their signature.) The challenge is fun and rewarding.

It’s great to help people find something they’ve spent a lot of time searching for. One of my favorite sales was a small, vintage Coca-Cola lighter. The customer bought it because when he was younger he borrowed his dad’s Coca-Cola lighter and lost it. It’s great to be able to help someone find something to replace a lost item or to help a collector get something they’ve been looking for a long time!
